You should check out the V-22 Osprey as a reference.
The point I'm trying to make here is that as far as design goes, it would be unnecessary to include BOTH rotating engines and VToL on the same craft. Both do the same job so it would make far more logical sense to simply move the landing gear to a better location than to include an entirely different set of engines for the only purpose of take-off.
As far as your comment about the craft being 'too long' doesn't seem to make any sense, logically or anatomically.
On a side note I highly doubt VToL is a good option for a medium transport vehicle anyway.
